DENNIS SUN Jeepney
Press
editor-in-chief and art director, Dennis Sun has won many awards in
writing and visual arts. Before launching Jeepney Press,
Dennis Sun was the first and only Filipino to become a regular
columnist for the Asahi Weekly Shimbun, a bilingual English-Japanese
newspaper circulated around Japan. He was also given a regular comic
strip that became popular among the Japanese. After graduating with a
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts Major in Visual Communications (cum laude) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman,
Dennis taught Humanities and Art Appreciation at the university level. He continues to
work as a graphic designer with clients as Japan Airlines, Toshiba,
Nova, Toyota, and more. He is actively doing
regular art exhibitions all around Japan.
CHRIS SANTOS A
vice-president of a German bank in Tokyo, Chris Santos graduated with a
degree in Electronics and Communications at the University of Santo
Tomas. At the university, he used to be the managing editor of The
Thomasian Engineer and is a licensed member of the Philippine Writer's
Association.
FRANCIS YU Francis
Yu completed his BS Architecture at the University of the Philippines
and went on to top the board exams. He obtained his Masters and
Doctorate degrees from the Tokyo University as a Japanese Ministry of
Education scholar.
BONIFRANK LORENZO Boni
was editor-in-chief of La Salle's campus publication before he came to
Japan as a Mombusho scholar at the Waseda University. He also edited
Silangan Shimbun before joining the company of Jeepney Press.
NANETTE FERNANDEZ Nanette
is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Santo Tomas where
she finished her BSE major in English. She was the editor of the
Education Journal and adviser to the high school organ, The Aquinian.
She also taught at the Ateneo College of Arts and Sciences and was the
director of the WHO/WPRO Learning Centre. She came
to Osaka as a Mombusho
scholar. She was a columnist for the Chronicle paper before gaining a
popular column for Jeepney Press.
Dr. JOVELLE FERNANDEZ The
doctor of Jeepney Press is a celebrated and multi-awarded doctor and
researcher in Japan. She took the grand prize sponsored by the Japan
Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology where she bested 100 presentors
worldwide. Her regular column for Jeepney Press helps mostly our
Filipino mothers and sisters with their medical health and problems.
MAY MASANGKAY May Masangkay is a professional journalist working
for Kyodo News. She gives the latest reports about what's happening in
Japan that concerns many Filipinos and foreigners.
OLIVE AKATSU Olive
is a president of a Filipino organization and is an active social
worker. She gives her time to Jeepney Press by writing a column on her
experiences in Japan.
ARLENE ESPERIDA
Arlene Esperida is an Exhibition Stand designer. She graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas.
Arlene is also a professional painter and illustrator and has exhibited
her works around Tokyo, Ginza, Manila and Jakarta. Her illustrations
can also be found online and in several publications in Manila and
Tokyo.
BETH CASTILLO-WINSOR
Beth Castillo-Winsor graduated cum laude from Silliman University,
Dumaguete City, finishing a degree in Mass Communication. She first
came to Japan in 1998 as a one-year exchange student to the
International Christian University in Mitaka, Tokyo. Currently, she is
working at an international pre-school in central Tokyo as a teacher
and manager. Beth also works for Wins Filipino Channel as a newscaster
for their show, Wins Weekly. She is an avid photographer and
shoe-shopper.
Fr. BOB ZARATE
Fr. Bob, as he is commonly called, is a Guest Priest at the Seishin Area (Central Shizuoka) with JONAI Church as his base. He has a bachelor's degree in Sacred Theology, Philosophy and Secondary Education, Major in English, from the Don Bosco College in Canlubang and Don Bosco Center of Studies in Paranaque City. He hails from Binan, Laguna.
MARIA TERESA MANALASTAS-TIMBOL
Marty, as friends call her, is a kababayan and batchmate of our dear
editor-in-chief, Dennis Sun. She graduated with a BS Hotel and
Restaurant Management at the University of Santo Tomas. She pursued
intensive Japanese language studies at the Kokusai Gakuyukai Nihongo
Gakko (Japanese Language School of the International Students
Institute) in Tokyo, Japan in 1986. She loves to bake during her free
time and enjoys her piano lessons. Marty is married to Enrico R.
Timbol with whom she has two sons and a daughter, Nico, Gian and Kayla.
ROGER AGUSTIN
Roger was editor-in-chief of The Philippine Artisan, publication of the
Technological University of the Philippines, before he came to Japan as
a Monbusho Technical College scholar in 1985. He received his
engineering degrees from Ibaraki College of Technology and the
Toyohashi University of Technology and while working, also received a
degree in Management Informatics from Sanno University. Roger has been
working in the automotive industry in the field of automotive
electronics (engine control) and has authored several patents on
On-Board Engine Diagnosis technology. He is an active amateur
photographer of Japanese seasonal landscapes and enjoys cooking in the
weekend.
SAM MARCELO
A product of the University of the Philippines (Diliman, Q.C.) and
San Sebastian College, CM Recto Manila. (B.S. in Commerce major in
Accounting) but ended up counting Meralco posts in the streets of Manila.
No company would like to take and hire a future computer builder and
assembler. A United States military veteran having served for eight
solid nerve wracking mind boggling years during the Vietnam era, now a
down to earth simple and peace loving, computer addict, builder,
assembler and seller. Motto and goal in life: To sell one computer a
day to every Tom, Dick and Harry of the Philippines - country I love
most.
ARLENE DINGLASAN
Arlene Dinglasan is a simple chocolate-loving Pinoy roaming around
Tokyo, keeping her eyes open for interesting things to do and people to
meet. If she’s not writing about any of them, she can be seen
performing with a handful of theater groups in Tokyo. Otherwise, she’s
happy "karaoke"-ing with friends or simply taking each day as it comes.
GINO C. MATIBAG, MD PhD
Doc Gino used to be an obstetrician-gynecologist in the Philippines. He earned his second Doctorate degree in Hokkaido University, Japan. Aside from the world of medical research, he is passionate about history, geography, trivia, photography, writing, and delicious food. He also likes karaoke but…
ALMA R. H. REYES
Alma is currently a freelance editor at ricorico, an editorial and book packaging office based in Tokyo that produces and publishes books on design, art, graphics, aniimation, architecture, and crafts for worldwide distribution. She worked as a coordinator for foreign titles at Graphic-sha Publishing Co. and as Visual Aids Manager at McKinsey & Co. Japan. She was also editor at the Institute of Continuing Education in Paris during her stay there. Alma came to Japan as a Monbusho scholar and graduated from Kyoto Institute of Technology with a Master of Engineering degree in Design. She holds a Bachelor of Interior Design degree (cum laude) from the University of the Philippines. Her young daughter, Marika, has joined Jeepney Press as a contributing illustrator.
FARAH TROFEO-ISHIZAWA
Farah was born and raised in Manila to a family of film makers. That maybe the reason why she is also working in the same field now although on a freelance basis. She is a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts graduate of Maryknoll College. Her hobbies are photography, billiard and watching movies. She loves to meet people and make new friends.
Ma. LOURDES CARMELLA JADE PANGILINAN
Jade as known to Jeepney Press readers is commonly called by her family and friends as “Chingkit”. She finished her BA degree in Social Sciences, major in Anthropology and Political Science, magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines. She is currently working for the City Government of San Fernando, Pampanga to pursue her passion for public service and faith in good governance. Further, staying in San Fernando, Pampanga has made her more committed to her volunteer work in the Girl Scouts of the Philippines Pampanga Council and the Federation of Pampanga High School Alumni Associations. She is also a regular columnist for “Punto” a daily newspaper circulating in Central Luzon.
